Why I Stayed Stuck for Years (And What Finally Changed)
I Thought I Was Just Stressed
For years, I told myself the same story.
You're stressed.
You're tired.
You're getting older.
This is what happens in your 40s.
It seemed like a reasonable explanation. After all, I was balancing a demanding career, raising a family, and managing the endless responsibilities that come with midlife.
So I did what many women do.
I pushed through.
I checked the boxes.
I kept showing up.
But underneath it all, something didn't feel right.
When "Normal" Doesn't Feel Normal
The anxiety didn't feel like ordinary stress anymore.
I would wake up at 3 a.m. exhausted, yet unable to fall back asleep. My mind would race while my body desperately wanted rest.
My energy became unpredictable.
Some days I felt focused, productive, and capable. Other days it felt like someone had pulled the plug on me.
I was dealing with:
Persistent fatigue
Brain fog
Sleep disruption
Anxiety
Digestive issues
Weight gain that didn't make sense
And yet, like so many women, I was told that everything looked normal.
My labs were "fine."
What I was experiencing was supposedly just part of aging.
But deep down, I knew there had to be more to the story.
The Moment I Stopped Guessing
Eventually, I reached a point where I could no longer ignore what my body was trying to tell me.
Instead of continuing to chase symptoms, I decided to look deeper.
I ran functional tests on myself to better understand what was happening beneath the surface.
When the results came back, I remember sitting at my desk staring at them.
For the first time in years, everything started to make sense.
What the Data Revealed
The testing uncovered multiple stressors that had been quietly contributing to my symptoms:
Gut Dysfunction
My digestive system wasn't functioning optimally, impacting everything from nutrient absorption to immune function.
Food Sensitivities
I had 21 foods that I was moderately or highly sensitive to. These foods were creating ongoing inflammation without me realizing it.
Helicobacter pylori Infection
A bacterial infection commonly associated with bloating, digestive issues, and impaired stomach function.
Elevated Cortisol
My stress response system had been running on overdrive for far too long.
Immune Activation
My immune system was working harder than it should have been, contributing to inflammation and fatigue.
Poor Detoxification Support
My body was struggling to efficiently process and eliminate what it needed to.
Oxidative Stress
Cellular stress was creating additional burden on my overall health and recovery.
Individually, none of these findings explained everything.
Together, they explained almost all of it.
My Body Wasn't Broken
This was the realization that changed everything.
My body wasn't failing me.
It wasn't betraying me.
It was communicating.
Every symptom I had been fighting against was actually a signal.
The fatigue.
The anxiety.
The sleep issues.
The digestive problems.
The weight gain.
My body had been trying to get my attention all along.
The problem wasn't that I lacked discipline.
The problem was that I lacked information.
Why I Believe So Strongly in Testing
For years, I treated symptoms as isolated problems.
I viewed fatigue as a lack of energy.
Anxiety as a mindset issue.
Sleep disruption as bad luck.
What I eventually learned is that symptoms rarely exist in isolation.
They are often connected by deeper physiological imbalances.
Without data, it's easy to guess wrong.
It's easy to spend years trying different diets, supplements, exercise programs, and wellness trends without ever addressing the root causes.
Testing doesn't solve everything.
But it provides clarity.
And clarity creates a roadmap.
What Healing Looks Like Now
Today, my approach looks very different than it did before.
I'm not trying to force my body into submission.
I'm not relying on more willpower.
And I'm not chasing quick fixes.
Instead, I'm focused on supporting the systems that help the body heal and function optimally:
Supporting my nervous system
Restoring gut health
Reducing inflammation
Improving resilience to stress
Supporting detoxification pathways
Rebuilding balance from the inside out
I'm creating an environment where the body can do what it was designed to do.
If You Feel Like Something Is Off, Listen
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that symptoms are information.
They're not inconveniences to ignore.
They're not signs of weakness.
They're messages.
And while not every symptom points to a serious problem, they deserve curiosity rather than dismissal.
If you've been feeling exhausted, anxious, inflamed, foggy, or unlike yourself lately, I want you to know this:
You don't have to accept feeling "off" as your new normal.
You don't have to settle for answers that don't explain what you're experiencing.
And you certainly don't have to keep guessing.
Your body is talking.
The question is whether you have the right tools to understand what it's trying to say.
